New shohin trees for sale on Blog page

I'm with you on hating the Ebay thing. I feel locked in and say to myself what alternative is there in a niche hobby like ours to get maximum nationwide exposure? There should be another avenue I would hope. Now I see this and I do like your idea of selling directly off of a blog, and may do the same myself now if I start one. On ebay I feel like people just are not buying like they used too, seems like the typical average is like $200 and below trees only. As a seller I feel I almost have to give things away, or dramatically reduce the price just to make a sale. If you do end up making a sale by the time ebay and paypal fees kick in, you ask yourself if it was worth it? Ebay can be a crap shoot, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Hopefully it evens out in the end. Good luck with your sales, looks like you have some nice items. I may pm you to see what you currently have.

ebay is expensive, more so than most people probably realize. ebay charges listing fees, takes 9% of the selling price and takes 9% of the shipping cost. Then paypal takes 3% of the payment. It adds up quickly.

Just a note to say I've seen Neil's shohins and they're top notch. I'd encourage anyone with a shohin jones to contact Neil about what he's got available.

eBay is great. They are your marketing that gives you access to so many people. The fees are the cost of that. I have purchased 65% of my trees off eBay.. How can you lose money if you list as anything other than a no reserve live auction? List as a sale price and not an auction. Add in ebays fees to the price. I find great deals with people that are not in the business of selling bonsai trees. They are usually selling from a personal collection. I don't understand the problems with eBay. Who is Neil's? Is there a website I could find their trees? When I buy from a new nursery I only discover through sites like this it amazes me that I have not heard of them before. They are hidden from the majority of the population, because we have such a niche hobby and are usually found through word of mouth.

Ebay as a marketplace for selling bonsai is the absolute worst. Often same case when your a buyer when greedy sellers are charging ou 3k for a garden Japanese maple that you have to dig yourself. (Really happened) there's a post on here on this...In any case back to ebay... fees fees and more fees. To make matters more challenging, Most buyers treat it like a garage sale. You have to give it away to sell it. Breaking even is not realistic anymore and I absolutely hate being limited to this venue when I need to reach a lot of people. Buyers can also stiff you and your unable to leave a negative feedback. You are limited to only reporting them and that's pretty much it.

I'm with you Don, Nomiyama and others...fees on shipping goodness.

On Facebook there is a group called Bonsai Classifieds, is getting ready to host an auction tomorrow.

You need a Facebook account but is worth giving it a try, no fees.

Jorge

Do you have a link to the bonsai classifieds? I have never been able to find it for some reason.

Ok I found it. How do you bid? Is it done just by posting a bid as a comment?

Yes, you enter your bid as a comment.

Two weeks ago an auction was held, all the items got deleted.

New items can be added tomorrow.

Bidding starts tomorrow at 7 p.m. CST.

Regards

Jorge

Jeremy,
Neil's is just me and my broken arrow bonsai blog. I will be adding a few trees to the sale page here and there. Hopefully prices are reasonable... At least a helluva lot better than 99.9% of what's on eBay from better quality for your $$ perspective.

I've been lurking on these forums, reading up as much as I can about various trees and vendors. I'm somewhat new to bonsai and still learning as much as possible but its been something I've had a great interest in since I was a kid. I'm also into keeping venomous snakes, breeding, and constructing well designed vivariums for various animals.

I saw this thread and thought, why isn't there a web site like this: www.kingsnake.com , but for bonsai trees?

Sure you have websites like this, people's personal blogs, but you have to dig to find these places. Finding decent trees is like digging through a clearance bin of DVDs at Walmart for a movie that you actually like. You have to sift through hundreds or thousands (websites) before you find that one "good one" and there is absolutely no organization to it what-so-ever. Having a centralized place of business where vast amount of vendors could go to in order to sell trees would be amazing. I know purchasing venomous animals would be very hard if it weren't for places like faunaclassifieds.com and kingsnake.com.

I personally dont like bidding on auctions on Ebay. It just sucks to get all excited about a tree to be spammed out at the last second. I prefer to go with the "buy it now" option.

I would be very leery of trusting someone selling from a blog because it would be too easy to get cheated that way. As least with Ebay, there is a mechanism for feedback on the seller, seller ratings and ways to get your money back if you get cheated. Even so, I am still very careful with whom I buy from on Ebay.

As they say Caveat emptor

Agreed on feedback, but paypal is notorious for siding with a buyer in a dispute. As long as there is proof of purchase, it is usually on the seller to provide proof that the item was sent/arrived as described.
