Hey guys, I've just been given a bonsai as a present and never done bonsai before! I think it's some sort of elm? Any advice would be greatly appreciated !

That is a Chinese Elm, Ulmus parvifolia

Short advice: Keep outdoors - not indoors - repot in better soil, water frequently.
Long advice: Welcome to the forums!

Just gave it a good watering!

Amen!

See how it was pulled from the sides?

That usually only happens when it's chok full of roots.
You'll probably be ok this year, but repotting next year should be in the plan.

Ah is that why? I thought it was because it was underwatered. That's very interesting to know thank you. Can you see anything else I should do immediately? I can't see any growths that need cutting back yet in my inexperienced eyes

Oh that too! But it only pulls away so perfect when a lot of roots are holding it's shape.
