hello all my name is Jesse i'm 25 years old and from Tennessee and new to the art of bonsai. I'm not new to growing things i've been doing it all my life. I'm doing tons of research right now and im holding off on chopping trees up until i can get atleast a basic understanding of everything but it seems im getting overwhelmed with information. hopefully soon i can get a project started but i dont even know how i want to start yet.

Welcome to the nut house! Plenty of good information to be found here in the existing threads from lots of knowledgeable people. Search through the forums and read a lot of what you find. There are also lots of great books out there and websites to learn from.

In regards to starting, in the next couple of months, Spring will be in full swing. You can search your local nurseries and find stock in maples, junipers, etc. You can also search for bonsai specific nurseries with much better starting material that has been developed for bonsai. Also look at collecting trees native to your area if you have the means to do so.

yeah ive been lurking on here for a couple days reading some good info.

Welcome. Lots of good bonsai in TN. Brussel's in Memphis area, good club in Nashville & Owen Reich, and Bjorn in Knoxville.

yeah im about 30 min north of nashville. my grandparents own about 100 acres thats heavily wooded i thought about trying to get some trees offf of the property but i really dont know what im looking for so i will probably buy a first tree.

Welcome. I'm pretty new here too. I have two bits of advice for you.

1. Read everything you can from lots of different sources. Most concepts of Bonsai are hotly debated, so read all sides of the debates and make an informed decision as to which side you will chose.

2. Get plants and practice. True learning is a hands on experience.

Good luck!

It's winter now, but focus on getting some small landscape trees and keeping them alive. Don't worry so much about "bonsai" but "horticulture". Once you can keep trees alive you can start trimming and shaping.

the timing is what i need to learn. like when you can trim the tree or roots or when you can dig a tree up and pot it. Im still unsure about that. well the only thing i am sure about is i want to learn as much as i can

With trees it universally accepted the best time to dig them up is in the spring just before they break dormancy. Its about the same with most flowering shrubs too, there are some exceptions, Ficus just about anytime is ok as well as many tropical varities, Junipers can be safely potted in the heat of August as they tend to go into a sort of slumber the same is true for the Mugo pine, but that is about the only pine that is true of.

The best thing I could tell you is give something a try and expect to kill it, if it survives don't worry you will kill one eventually. :) Have fun and welcome to B-Nut !
