Hey there! Not new to bonsai, but it's been 20 years since my last attempt... school, life, all those kinds of things got in the way.
Not new to plants however, worked in a greenhouse for 7 years, was the "perennial guy."
Finally a homeowner and starting up a collection again!
My house came with some woods, and in those woods are what I thought at first to be carpinus caroliniana, but now I'm pretty sure after seeing leaves (and some of the flowers on the big trees) that they are ostrya virginiana.
Their bark is not smooth or gray like the carpinus, they're more reddish and have a "shaggier" bark to them.
My questions for these are:
-Should I chop these big ones much further down
-The 5 smallest of them I was considering making into a forest planting, should I chop or leave as-is?
-Is it too late to chop, or should I wait until next spring? I'm in eastern North Carolina
And, unrelated to these, I've got several azaleas with thick trunks that the previous homeowner cut back very hard before I moved in (July of last year).
I debated on collecting them this spring but hesitated since they had been hacked back so hard. I let them bloom in the spring.
-When would be a good time of year to collect them?
