Newbie stubborness

Leatherback,

the new are not ready to make the necessary space in their lives
for Bonsai.

Hence the countless Fukien teas, placed near windows, that die
from roots exposed to winter temperatures though the glass
and often heating turned down during the day as they go to
work.

Then to have the heat turned back up in the evening.
85 high to 65 deg.F will kill a fukien tea as well as other Mallsai.

Plus, no growlights etc,

It is worse after Christmas or impulsive purchasing.
"help it is dying ..............

On IBC, the experienced heads disappear untl March or so.

No thinking, just give / I demand a response.
Good Day
Anthony.

I was more thinking.. they are not ready to recognize they do not understand the answer given. And instead of asking what is meant / why the recommendation is given they push back, with quite aggressive undertones. I found it most perculiar.

I Dont think many are here just to attack others. I mean, some like to mess with people. But really put people down..? Nah. But last night I ran i to several instances of unneeded lashing out.

End of the month? Salaries in? Beer nights?

I am retiring at the end of the year from my job in maintenance that I have had for 30 years. I was doing interviews yesterday for a position and one of the questions was “What in your experience particularly qualifies you for this position?”

One of the applicants replied “A fresh perspective, I can see things that seasoned veterans can not see”

Needless to say, he did not get the job.

It depends a lot on context, so I would not think to second guess your decision. I am sure you made the right choice.
We had a new guy in an entry level position who's answer the the question; "Where do you see your carrier progressing?" was "CEO". He was fired in less than a year due to being an egotistical ass.
But if I can play "devils advocate", assuming it is not just an over-inflated ego (which it often is), this can be the diversity that most teams need an infusion of periodically in order to remain relevant. In my job (23+ years) I encourage and even seek out fresh new perspectives. They are often wrong (sometimes very, VERY wrong), but when they are right it can be exactly what is needed to prevent stagnation.
But more often than not, just a bad combination ego and ignorance.

You just proved his point ;-) He saw in himself what you didn't!
That "fresh perspective" phrase got me my current job by the way. I managed to turn a 6 person operation into a 1/2 person job with that perspective, and it kind of sucks because now I have to do the shitty parts of the job as well. The veterans never told me about those pitfalls!

Over-inflated egotistical ass are very well described terms in this situation.

You have to remember, not everyone is looking for a hobby. Some are just trying to save a tree or got one and is satisfied with just one.

Maybe if he was really confident in his ability to see things that seasoned veterans can not, he would not have shown up for the interview. o_O

It can the equivalent to my wife saying "Where are my keys?" before she starts to even look herself! 🤣 There are few newbies that just seem to want a quick answer without wanting to put in just a little time of their own researching- even just using the search functions.

To your point warpig, I will say that sometimes as a newbie some of the threads get frustrating sometimes. Sometimes you can ask a very narrowly defined, pointed question and get flowing tangential responses which may or may not even be related to the question itself. Though in that case one should try their hardest to be patient and often through responses can coax out a more direct answer. And so some folks who don't have the patience could end up frustrated and angry.

But I think leatherback means more along the lines of belligerent know-it-alls maybe? I personally don't even know who is new and who is long term here.

I don't disagree with this at all, but I think it's part of the forum itself. Having a forum where you can quickly post a question and perhaps minutes later get an answer encourages that very type of thing. The forum is a way for folks who have no experience to connect with those who do and it's a way for them to quickly crowdsource an answer. And I think many times people would rather just have someone give them an answer rather than read things they may not understand on websites where they can't just quickly say, "well, can you explain what this means here?" I don't know, I'm just spitballing.

It's hard doing research as you quickly find out EVERYTHING is subjective. So I've found that online research isn't markedly better than discussions here. Hell, in Colin Lewis' book Bonsai Basics he writes about how you must add organics to the soil and gives approx amounts. But then you go to his very own blog...

...and right there in the first line he has written "As far as I'm aware there is no physical advantage in using any organic matter in your bonsai soil, but there are some disadvantages." So, as a new person, that would make me go "huh?". So I've found that often research basically presents the viewpoints you'll see played out in the forum and thus one could use the forum for a gauge as to which to follow. Is that the correct way? I don't know, but I think it may help explain it. I do try to at least do research, but I can maybe understand why some don't. I think laziness plays a part, but it probably isn't the sole explanation.

Noob: Check out my new juniper!
Long time nutter: It should be outside.
Noob: No the guy said it could be inside.
Long time nutter: It should really be outside or it will eventually die.
Noob: whatever, i'm gonna make it a cascade.
Long time nutter: You're an idiot.
Noob: everyone here is so mean.

Personally, I'd like to apologize if I fall under that umbrella! I love this site and hope I'm not contributing to lowering the standards!
Same here. I have been just making conversations to avoid this. Some really accepting knowledgeable teachers here.
