Hello everyone my name is drew, Im rather new to bonsai and had a few questions about one of my few trees I've acquired. Is it ok to prune satsuki azaleas before bud break? How far back can you prune them? Thanks

Hi and welcome

Depending on how severe the pruning will be, if it is just a light pruning you can do it after blossom is finished, you removed the flowers and prune. If it is a drastic pruning it is done early spring before bud break but you dont let it bloom this year, you remove all buds so it recovers strengh.

Satsuki bud backs on hard wood easily so you can cut back pretty hard

Just got around to editing some of my info. I live in northeast fla. The buds on the suki havent begin to swell yet. I would like to see it bloom (for the first time since Ive acquired it), but i think i may want to prune it as its looking a little wild.(many long shoots)
