Hey Si... can you check with Steve about hosting our next meeting? We're about due... Next few weekends are pretty open for me. Are Ian and Mike going to be around? I can check with Jim once we get a date from Steve...

PS I repotted that Chinese Elm you gave me. I thought that was an air layer or something relatively new! You've had that tree for a LONG TIME.

I am around, as far as I know...seems every time I make plans work comes along and screws things up...but no plans for travel in the next few weeks.

BTW do you guys have any sources (closer than House of Bonsai) for pumice & lava? I'm about to run out of the stuff I brought with me from the East coast...

I get my pumice from OC Farm Supply. Si hooked me up with them. Dirt cheap. A huge (50lb? 60lb) bag costs somewhere around $8.

Hi guys. I will ask Steve. But if he can't host then I will. I know his house was very busy because he was installing a large roof solar panel system. How about next weekend? You guys can check out my new Cali junipers.

Ian, you brought pumice and lava with you from the east coast!?! Were you crazy?

The pumice is cheapest at Orange County Farm Supply store in Orange. I have membership discount if you want to buy a lot. I still have a few 50 lbs bags if you need some asap. The best and cheapest lava is still at the House of Bonsai, where you can buy in bulk. Just bring your own buckets.

Greg, I probably had that little elm for 10 years. I forgot what it looked like though. I like to see how you styled it.

:)

I'm up for next weekend! I'll check with Jim and see if he can make it. I know I am due to host one of these days, but I am waiting to get some coping and fence work completed. I forgot to ask about Bonhe - is he still around?

I was just at House of Bonsai this week picking up a big pot for that big California juniper I have. I should have waited and asked for help - I can barely lift it by myself and repotting was a real workout. I picked up a nice zelkova and a blue mound juniper of all things. If you are looking for a medium-size kishu shimpaku they had a ton of them in 2 gallon nursery pots for $135.

Si I haven't done anything with that elm, per se, except bend a few wayward branches. I am trying to get it to throw out some strong growth to increase the caliper of the trunk so I moved it into a mesh pot.

I was just at the HOB yesterday. Didn't find any tree. But I saw a big flock of House finches (males have very pretty red face) and a few small green head parrots flying around. It may be a cool place for birding! I may go again next week if anybody wants to come along.

Hi Si,

Next weekend should be good for me too.

I already had the pumice and lava and my company paid to move everything out. Thanks for the pumice offer I'll grab a bag at the weekend if thats ok and maybe head out to HoB.

Ian will be hanging out at Fashion Island. His favorite place in the WORLD!

Ok Si - I'll plan on Saturday AM. No beers but I'll bring snacks.

I'll send Jim an invite.

OK, everybody is on board.
So far we have: Bonhe, MichaelJ, IanB, BNUT, SteveH, and Si, and maybe one more new person.

See you guys tomorrow at my house. The time is flexible. You can come a little early or stay a little late. About 10 to 1. I may need help with a big tree repotting.

No lunch but there should be plenty of snacks and beers. Anybody interested in a game of speed chess in between trees?

There maybe a field trip to the Winter Silhouette show on Sunday if enough people want to carpool. Something for you to consider.

Be there or be square!
