It looks like you didn’t replace the soil you scraped away. Your soil surface should look like this when you’re finished:
Sorry yes I did do that after, just didn't upload the picture. I will try and put some small holes in the soil tonight then leave it alone until spring for a repot

You can use a screwdriver as a tool you can push down into the rootball. If it’s real “solid”, it doesn’t matter, push it in you won’t damage much root. Once inserted, wiggle it back and forth, and around and around. Then force some new soil down into the void you created. Do this all over.
