For those of you interested in yew bonsai, Nigel Saunders just began a 2 part video series on his YouTube channel on collecting a yew from his back hard. Just go to YouTube and search for the Bonsai Zone. Well worth it just to see him wrestle it out of the ground.

Yews are not an easy dig either. The 3 landscape yews I dug were by far the most challenging trees I’ve dug up so far.

Do you have a thread on that dig? Did they pull through so far?
Hey, no thread. But two of the three are still alive and doing pretty well. They were all pretty big. The two that are still alive are both very upright varieties. I call them the twins. I dug them in early spring 2018. They’re both around 5or so feet tall. Will be eventually reduced. I tried to keep as much foliage as possible to help them recover. Here’s a couple pics of them last fall, October 2018. This spring they put out some good growth and are doing well but no recent pics. (On vacation rn). The roots were definitely very heavily reduced I feel that leaving a decent amount of foliage and not reducing the trunks right away has kept these two alive. The one that died was so wide I had to take a lot of foliage off to even fit it I my truck. Thinking a kind of informal formal upright type design in their future.
