Rainbow eucalyptus air layer collected April 14th 2019. Just a straight stick with barely any roots, it is totally uninteresting now.

Why did you air layer such a skinny branch? Not being critical just trying to learn. I thought the whole point of an air layer is to gain years on trunk growth, at the expense of root growth? Thank you

Pretty much. In bonsai, an air layer is used to give you a piece of material with trunk girth and movement (hopefully) that would otherwise take you years to develop from a cutting or seedling.

My larger rainbow eucalyptus has a trunk of only about 1.25". It was growing tall quick and I knew I would cut the top off this spring. I just did the air layer for giggle. I was going to give the air layer away but the NN do the 10 year challenge so I figure my stick is equivalent to starting out from a cutting.

I know that normally air layer is done to get a quick start on a big trunk. Alas, I got no big rainbow eucalyptus to air layer. This one is done to save me 8 months of getting one that size started from seeds based on past experience.

Thanks for your reply. Almost all of my pre-bonsai material is like this lol. Mainly cuttings from my garden, bonsai club workshops. If I have it I might as well learn with it.

I submit this Yurihime maple. Probably 8 years in the ground real soon before I decide to airlayer ?

In 3 months the tree has grown about 2ft. Diameter at the base went from 3/8" to 7/8".

So it's much cooler here. Had forecast a few days high 70's we never seen... I'm seeing consistent 40's at night.(Lake microclimate). And cooler day temps. That I went ahead and potted this up. And pulled out long sleeves for the temps. Lol
Chojubai quince cuttings from Brent.

And after...
That saying when material is inferior to make a grouping and make it more. Applies I hope.

Year 1 update, continued from post #10.

Varying degrees of success...

Started with 5 trident seedlings planted through plywood, one was eaten by my dog (rip), one looks pretty nice (last pic), and the rest are somewhere in between.

I recently repotted these to cut the tap roots below the plywood. The single with no root growth above the plywood was not root pruned.
