Poor thing has good flair but I don’t see any potential for nebari. Does anyone see any hope?

I reckon there are a few things worth trying? Splitting roots apart and/or upward, grafting, and ground layering that lower semi tap root bit. Easier to wire loop it closer to the first branch and bury it though for sure. You can probably still keep the current base too as they tend to live long enough underground to be revived...

I guess the real question is can I graft some of the roots to where I want them?

Pretty sure that normally needs the new “root” to be a complete small tree/seedling although it might be possible with just a root, I tried it a few years ago but tbh I can’t remember if it worked - I sold the tree.

There are plenty of possibilities in creating a good nebari!

It will take some time, but all good things take time.

You didn’t mention the type of tree you are working. Anyway... Study up the best methods to making cuttings for this deciduous tree and get some started this year. Given good growth you may be able to use them next year or the following to do approach (in arch) grafts. I’d spend some time planning out your game plan ...And studying up on grafting.

Alternatively, you could start doing grafts this year if you can locate seedlings of this tree type.

In any event, I’d look up @MACH5 posts. He’s an expert in using grafting to create magnificent nebari.

Good luck and Cheers

Which species do you have?

Many trees will throw out new roots from the trunk if the main roots are trimmed back strongly and the plant is planted deep enough to have the full nebari covered.

I would not do anything before I had this out of the pot and the roots cleaned out. Basically, at the moment you have a high root. Perhaps there are great roots just below the soil. Improper potting can get you trees with "multiple rootflares".

There is hope...if you’re willing to do the work. Dig down and expose the roots all the way around, and at repotting you can decide if it has enough roots on one plane that grafting will work to fill in the gaps. If not, layering is an option.

Some trees aren’t worth the effort, but that’s for you to decide.

Thanks for the responses. It’s the yellow trimmed Japanese maple, Bihou. I’ve read that it was extremely hard to do anything on these. I tried an air layer last year and it didn’t even try to root.
