I really only recognize ginseng ficus on sight, the others are nebulous - saw these at a local garden center, curious what they are besides "indoor bonsai". Any thoughts, interesting?
Thanks

I'm pondering getting one for my birthday, an indoor/winter project, are these decent for mid $100 money? I know they'll need time, but I just like the feeling of age I get from them. Much like the impending birthday 😣

That first one, in the tan pot, the roots starting over the edge intrigued me. Otherwise it looks like they've only been building trunks on these, so all the other work is up to you.
So, are you up for spending $100 on just a trunk you like?

Those things are a mess. Definitely trunks though. Every Nebari needs reconstructive surgery....but the first one has good taper.
Funny, the first one is the one i going back to.. in my mind, I want to make it shorter. In that vision, I see something from a Conan the Barbarian illustration. Mess is right, I think he's overwhelmed - owner is getting up in years, and I've always kinda liked him. Want to support.

I kinda think yes, if the rest can be fixed with time - that's the hobby, I guess. Maybe i learn a little, if only to buy better material.

Now that I look at some of the group pictures, I bet you could do a great stop action dinosaur movie in that place 😀

That's fair.

And now I want to go home and watch old 60s sci-fi.

I knew I would buy it... Put into a little bigger pot, combed the roots a little, put in a mix of potting soil and boon's mix, and gave it some root tonic from Superfly.. in the spring I'll work it over for real, assuming it survives.

That bulb is just one I picked up at a local hardware store (Handyman) - a $25 led grow bulb. I have two, probably not enough, but more than I had for the trees least winter. Much nicer to be had,

Nice base on your choice! Hell, you could chop under first branch and rebuild canopy in relatively no time at all! When assured it has it vigor of course.
cool tree.

I repotted my ficus for real a couple weeks ago, cut some of the larger root knuckles flush, seems happy- does this look like the beginning of good growth for a relatively shady Ohio homed tree? I've done some trimming on it, nothing substantial - still have visions of a much shorter tree, maybe next summer

Looks good.

If your vision of shorter still includes the tippy top, I'd take off that left of the top 3 to keep the swelling down.

Truth though, the sweep ups of the other branches, with a heavy prescription future vision goggles, seem tough to make as cool as this could be if you started them all over.

I stopped caring about mine some time ago, so it's been severely abused. Last fall, I chopped it back to nothing, not even buds, and it came back well, further neglected under old lights in the cold basement.....20220705_041152.jpg

With what is almost no soil in that devoured basket.

So don't be afraid to go ham.

Though you could also thread graft branches where you want them rather easily and with few negatives if they fail.

I'd like to see you get it into a wider pot(basket) to train the roots too.

It seems like a final pot should be about double that size, so something a bit larger than double would be sufficient to train it in.

Not for "health", but to allow enough room to design a good surface roots.

Agree that it is coming along nicely. If it were me, the next step would be to cut off the large branches and regrow new branches from that nice trunk!

This was my vision, sounds like it's not too crazy, maybe doable this year? Agree about the pot, seemed bigger when I started this project.

Thanks!
