Got a Noble Fir seedling a few years ago at the flower and garden show. Put some wire on it, gave it a few bends, planted it in good soil and put it in a corner to be forgotten. When I did look at it a year later the wire had bit in pretty good, but I also noticed that all the roots were coming out of one side.
I just found this rock with a pretty deep hole and a lightbulb went off in my head. I got lucky, the bends and roots worked out. Made my own muck with mud from a tub garden, fines from sifting soil, and finely chopped sphagnum. Had a nice clay like consistency and stuck well. The roots cascade down the side packed with soil and encased in muck, then half way across the bottom of the pot. I added a few small azaleas and put moss on it. Eventually I can maybe see it on a slab.
