New forum member here. I have a 6 ft Bloodgood with a 3" primary trunk and very nice multi-trunk form that I would like to train to stay at its current size. Perhaps more a "pygmy" than bonsai. Is this possible if it's in the ground? Where should i start?

It is very possible. When bonsai techniques are used for trees in the ground on a larger scale, it is called "niwaki". There are some books on the subject. Some of my favorite trees are 8 feet high and in the ground. They're a lot easier to take care of.
