I am new to bonsai but would like to turn this Monterey cypress into my first attempt. It was very small when I bought it three and a half years ago. It has grown vigorously in a pot outside in the summer and in my basement under grow lights in the winter (located in northern Indiana.) It is about 5' tall now. I have cut it back a few times.
My plan right now is to cut it back to about two feet tall to encourage stronger lower branch growth on the tree and to leave it in its current pot for now.

It's a really gorgeous tree and I hope to keep it growing long term - but as a bonsai. Any thoughts on my best moves from here on out?96255016_742329499843472_641039446774382592_n.jpg96525096_617127419013665_2360109521566695424_n.jpg

I agree that it needs to be chopped back, and maybe you can try your hand at “air layering” some of the top before cutting it back. Most of this should be done early spring, not sure where that falls in northern Indiana! Good luck, post progress.
