07EE3ED3-8619-4AF6-BC24-8404ED0F8668.jpegSo I went to take some cuttings today of what was sold to me as a trident maple but I noted the leaf pattern is alternate, not opposite. Any ideas?

I am going to say Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum).
Those have opposite leaves.

Mulberry?
It fits this one better. Doesn't seem to have the right shape to the lobes. Most of those that I've seen have big, rounded openings, not notches. Don't really tend to have red in their leaves like this one does, but variation happens.

What about a kind of sweetgum? Those are alternate, similar shaped leaves, and I've seen mine here have reddish new growth.

The red veins and petioles aren't the same as I see here though...

Or field maple.

That also has opposite, not alternate leaves.

This one seems to match up quite well.
At least a bonsai isn't likely to produce too many of those nasty balls, eh? Apparently they like to develop surface roots and have extraordinary fall coloration. I'd alert the guy I bought it from, if I were you, @Robertji.

Thanks for all the replies folks, I’ll have to research this sweetgum and look at the leaves, and pay more attention when I buy something.

They can look a lot like red maple leaves, especially when young, but I admit there is something different looking with the OP's leaves.

The lower leaves look a lot more like traditional sweet gum leaves. The ones closest to the camera look a little odd
