My wife and I were at a local nursery last Saturday picking up a few plants and some more projects to mess with on my down time, when my wife came and got me to show me this Japanese maple growing in there landscape. Did I mention my wife is awesome, anywho it had been neglected and the rootstock and taking back the tree. Only a part of whatever cultivar it is, is still living but stressed. So I’m calling all maple pros on this one,
1. Anyone recognize the cultivar?
2. If I cut back the rootstock will the cultivar come back to health, or should I just work with the rootstock?

So I asked if it I could take it and the said yes with a price but it’s home now.

Looks a little like my katsura, but I'm being there are quite a few suspects. So, did it just send up shoots from the roots?

I'm super new at this, but it looks like you can get a couple layers of the root stock growth, clean the rest off the cultivar, start trying to salvage it. I like the look of the trunk, think it could be nice in the future, maybe after some surgery.. document it all, love to see how it goes

Thanks, yeah it’s pretty cool couldn’t pass on the opportunity. Hope it makes it, either way I think it’s a win.
