I've cut nursery cans down to make smaller pots but the walls become flimsy because the plastic lacks rigidity.

Then it hit me, why not hot glue the rim back onto the top?

It works great! The pot is rigid enough to tie the tree in with wire. All it cost was a few cents worth of hot glue.

I've seen others wire the tops back on but if you don't have shallower pots this is much better than half filling pots with soil to get a shallow root system.

Will hot glue last outside? I have a ton of gallon pots. Great idea!

Ill just use the quick set two part epoxy and see how that holds up.

I think the glue will last but I've found that the glue does not stick to some types of plastic. Any materials scientists out there who can shed some light?
I'm no material scientist, but hot glue forms a film on softer plastics instead of bonding with it, because it doesn't use a solvent. Some coarse sandpaper could fix that problem.
But cheap super glue should work because it does have a solvent in it that softens the outer layer of the plastic and makes it stick.

Personally used sheet metal screws. Also could use screws and nuts(no sharp points)🤔. Pop rivets work too.

95% hot glued ones lasted all season for me. As an alternative I wonder how ABS glue would work. I might do a test run.

Personally lift heavy pots by rim so would be disaster if glue failed😖.
