Im putting these air layers in the grow bed this Autumn.
I may use Rootpouch bags. They prune by entrapment pruning and can lift back out of the ground without shocking rootsytem or growth.Even after several years as they sell anything from 1-5 year bags I believe.
I was going to plant on tiles, but honestly like the Rootpouch method of ground growing. Can still plant on tiles INSIDE the pouches!!
At least a good experiment!
A 3-4 year fabric sounds optimal really, for what I want to do.Definately want entrapment pruning and not air pruning for this technique.

There is no such thing as entrapment pruning, I don't know who sold you on that idea or is this something you made up out of whole clothe out of your own understanding. If entrapment pruning were a reality it would be at such a level of stress for the tree it probably would not survive. How long have you been growing bonsai? I would love to see some of your recent bonsai.

Entrapment is what the manufacturer claims. I cannot substantiate this, I only have experience with the air pruning type (e.g. SmartPot).

All other fabric companies boast that they air-prune roots. Root Pouch does not air-prune, our fabric weave prunes by entrapment.
cf. https://rootpouch.com/nurseries

I think starting around figure 23 here they present a study arguing that Root Pouch achieves similar performance to Air Pot in creating mostly fine feeder roots. (Note the english version is WAY down past the Italian and German)

Hi, @Vance Wood
Entrapment pruning is real! And I like it.
These are Bonsai to me🙃
First ... please watch the couple minutes of footage in these two videos .
I used Rootpouch on seedling and roots get tangled and then branch along length of root.My first experience with Rootpouch.
Then I literally have to rip the pouches off, which actually invigorated the young Pines. Then planted in little grow pots, then they went outside in Spring.
They are doing well and I have more sprouting as I write this.

And I like making Zelkova Air Layers.Going into Rootpouch in ground this Autumn and that is Bonsai to me also.😂

I can understand this really.

‘This’ is now and ‘ceramic pots’are when I have Bonsai and actually enjoy developing and pruning roots.

All jokes aside,I just like the idea of the instant mini- rootball on the first season Pines.AND I want to experiment with setting these Entrapment Pouches in ground with my air layers so I can just lift the darn things out in a couple years and not have roots growing everywhere in the Earth.
Also nice Winter storage for my future Bonsai.I don’t want to build winter storage for all my trees!!
Its an experiment too.
