Hi All,
I'm pretty new to bonsai and I'm very glad that my interest has caused those near to me buy me trees. I was given this pyracantha and need some ideas for shaping.

Two questions:
1. How hard can I cut this back. The branch poking off to the left looks like it should come off; will doing so kill it?
2. If I remove that large branch what shape should I pursue?

Thanks!

I have cut pyracantha way back and had it bud. If this were mine, I'd plant it in a large pot and let it grow at least another year, and then cut it down to its lowest branch. I know you probably don't want to do this, but I don't see any other way to add good taper to it since most of the branches and trunk are similar diameter.

Hi Bonsai Barry,

Very good. I didn't think I could be as aggressive as you suggested but I hoped I could cut it back pretty far. I've got a pretty big pot it can hang out in for another year.

Thanks!
