Seeing if I can a good thread going showing before and after results of Nursery stock trees. If a thread like this already exists, than I can't seem to find it. Im about 7 yrs in and though I've dug several yamadori at this point, much of my collection comes from nursery stock. For myself and so many other newbies, its the best way to practice methods, styling, aggressive work vs. patience, etc. I also love the challenge nursery stock presents.

Would love if every tree posted had a before shot in its original state and the price you paid, though I understand that can't always happen!! Thanks and Tree on!!

I'll start. Here is a RMJ I bought from a local nursery for $21. styled it as a formal upright in spring 2017 and planted it on a rock slab today, spring 2018. IMG_1449.jpgIMG_0826 2.JPGFullSizeRender 7.jpg

initial styling was done the day i Purchased. april 2017. Here is a pic of what that looked like. second pic above was taken october 2017. and the bottom pic was taken today. I pushed the tree hard when i bought it. Heavily root pruned and styled in the same go. IMG_1458.jpg

That is a Rocky Mountain Juniper and you got it at a nursery? Cool. You don't see many native junipers at nurseries (save collected trees at a bonsai nursery, which are astronomical). Guess I need to go to Albuquerque some time.

Your a funny guy. Keep up the work. Time will be your friend.
Humor is all you can have in the face of blatant sarcasm. I see you have a million or so messages and likes. Any nursery trees in there that have truly humble beginnings? in all seriousness id love to see em if you've got em. Your profile pic alone speaks of years of quality and experience. Either way, thanks for the words of encouragement. I enjoy this art.

Oh yeah! my oldest friend runs whats called the Santa Ana Garden Center in bernalillo, NM. They start countless native species from saplings to seeds and cuttings. One seed juniper, alligator juniper, New mexico olive etc. Best part is that the nursery is on the rez so its all tax free.

Here is a Taxus x Hicksii I purchased in the fall of 2014 for $19. The second pic is from last week. I had issues with all the roots on the left side bunched up under the base. Found this during the 1st repot.

Looks like a great start! I’ve killed several taxus from HD and Lowe’s over the years. Also have not found one I truly had to have.

Here's a procumbens I bought in May of last year. No idea how much I paid for it. Initial styling done last fall. This year I'll reduce the root bll some, then let it grow out. Restyle this fall, reduce root ball some more the following spring, etc, until it will fit into a training pot.

I really like that last one. I’ve always struggled finding taxus that have branches coming off the main trunk in a relatively horizontal position. Looks like you’ve found a few. That last one also reminds me of a Migs pine from a graham potter video!

You gotta find a true Taxus bacatta, which has a naturally spreading growth habit.
Many of the commercially available yews are hybrids with a more upright habit.

I do have at 2 like that.

And thanks!!

I’m breaking my own rules here. But I’m terrible at remembering to snap a shot first. Here’s a San Jose juniper I got for $12 on clearance from Lowe’s. Fall 2016. Initial styling in spring 2017 and finished styling and deadwood fall 2017.
