Hahaha sounds like you used too much. Literally just a thin smear over the cut site and stops sap flow on pine and spruce.

I dont cover the cuts
The sticky sap flowing out wil seal the cut
I used vaseline once but the sap pushed right trough

Doesnt look like sap to me that runs down to leave a trail , this looks like mould, the type you get if you have bark chippings in a pile it goes white inside the pile. A tooth brush and clear water will get rid if it but i believe it is fairly harmless
