NOT! :)

With Ryan Neil and his tuesday study group. I've taken the camera along and hope to get some
shots to post of the trees in newly styled form. There are 5 in this group....

I slipped into the monday group, late yesterday and wish I'd have taken my camera. OMgoodness! Trees as nice as I'd never seen before.

if this is too personal just pm me and I can delete this.. but, how much does a RN study group run/person?

I agree...curious folks want to know if it is within their grasp to dream... ;) :o

If you look on Ryan's bonsai mirai web site, his classes are $700 for a weekend. There is also a three week comitment to more classes, but I don't really understand how the arrangement works...

You're also apparently required to buy $120 worth of assorted wire. Lodging is extra...

All that is pretty reasonable, if you have the time and the cash. You can probably accelerate your tree development by a decade with the knowledge and hands-on experience you get...

If you go to an event like the one in Harrisberg PA it is more like a 100 dollars a day so you all know. Also Mr Pall is at most of those as well :)

And if your aunt had balls she'd be your uncle. The OP is in Seattle. What does Nature's Way have to do with it? It is on the complete opposite side of the continent. If you factor in travel and lodging, you probably still come out ahead, and without the attitude...

Emphasis is mine:

Lordy, since the folks who asked are all over the US (TX, WA, and FL), I think the comment has merit. :)

And your point?

Point is you're acting as if the only option suggested was to go far out of the way to attend an event when it was suggested that the person find a similar event because it would cost less. Obviously the person could find something happening close to where they live to cut down on travel cost.

Well I was surprised to find so much posted in my absence. :)

I did get PM's sent to those that specific asked for the cost. let me say he is about double what I'm used to paying. Do you get your money's worth out of the session. most certainly.

Day started off with an hr long discussion about how to do things. His stuff is always 180 degrees from what you've read, but his horticultural degree and training in Japan makes the info solid gold.

Just watching him repot other's trees, made me aware of numerous things I would never have done but seems so lodgical now looking back.

Here's one for you that you didn't have to pay for.....

when it comes to anchoring your trees to the pot, he uses 17 gauge galvanized electric fence wire. Available most hardware stores (true value) and comes in a 1/4 mile length spool. He says it doesn't stretch or give over time and is worth using.

I've had trouble posting photos, so i'm gonna try and do some now, but if it doesn't go at least you had a mini report and maybe something (anchoring wire) worth the read. Well as you can see, sorry, i tried.

I'd have to say what I valued the most over the whole days was his assesment of a limber pine ( american member of white pine family) that I purchased from a person who yamadori dug. Wonderful old bark but base had inverse taper. I told him I was thinking of selling at the club auction. within seconds he changed angle of potting to dramatic 65 degree from upright and went on to explain about limb placement. Incredible. so I begged hm to tell me what goes thru his mind about design and he went back to lecture mold and outlined it. Incredible information!!!!
The tree we worked on that day was what I wanted to share in a photo. was an engleman spruce, native to the northwest. a collected tree from someone's collection that looked like a round ball of tiny needles. end result was amazing since one of the members of the class who I respect for their ability, said don't buy the tree no future. Ryan had it at the end where even he had to say it was a pretty good tree.
far as the ladies go, it came to light that Ryan had recently married and was wearing a copper looking wedding band on his left hand. was all the buzz from the monday group which had several ladies. My tuesday group is all guys.

I purchased and plan to use ALUMINUM electric fence wire. They are cheap and very strong...doesn't stretch (used it in my guy wiring w/ turnbuckles). Please double check if he is indeed using galvanized.

Mine is like this...

Purchased from Home Depot or Lowes (?)

I wrote down all the particulars from the spool he was using then asked where he got it from so know info is factual :)

Actually my point was that the OP was IN Seattle which is not far for him, and thought you were suggesting he fly to Harrisburg. Perhaps in Seattle there are not the number of options that showcase as strong a talent. Just sayin. My apologies for misinterpreting your post. Additionally, the attitude I referred to was not yours, by the way.

Ok. Even if it is not what Ryan is using, consider the aluminum instead. ;)

Having had the opportunity to watch Ryan repot the California Junipers at the Huntington gardens collection several weeks ago I can assure you that aluminum wire would not have cut it with some of the anchoring that was required. He seriously torqued and levered some of the securing wires that would have certainly snapped if it were anywhere close to the same gauge of aluminum

I agree that steel is always stronger than aluminum. Note however that these are NOT your regular aluminum. I bent a 1" boxwood branch using a single strand of this w/ a turnbuckle. If you've worked with boxwood, you will know how much it takes to pull it out of shape. A 5mm wiring aluminum would possibly have stretched.

I assure you...this will cut it. For really monstrous trees, you can always double it up.

Anyway, mine is just a recommendation, use it or not, doesn't matter to me. ;)
