If you're having high mortality rates with your collected material place more emphasis on horticultural health rather than bonsai aesthetic and tradition. At least until they recover and try to shoot out and break their yamadori form.

I don't really have high mortality rate with my bonsai, just my haiku.

Part of the hinch mountain system in east tennessee, I used to work for the landowner in their logging :- / operation. They leave the steep rocky spots alone, and the small twisted trees, so I know where all the good stuff is

Im lucky to be on a mountainous rocky plateau, and I live in a small rural town, so I know everybody and im friendly so I get permission. Ive started gathering some native lava rock which blew my mind when I found it, some is fossilized by limestone, so its gotta be from a long long time ago, ive never used true akadama,, but I hope to make my own now that I can harvest the raw material

Next spring I want to transition all my trees to homemade akadama , I have an industrial horticulture background, and a passion for yamadori. Im a real slacker on the wiring.

Well all my trees are in a really porous, free draining soil mix that I prepare for general garden use, it runs richer than traditional akadama. But ive found a local source of native black lava rock, now that I have access to unlimited raw material im just being lazy if I dont make a true akadama for my trees.

You mean homemade substrate. Akadama is a very specific type of material.
