Strong buds. Most needles appear healthy.
IMG_7661.jpeg
Backbudding.
IMG_7664.jpeg

Roots pre-prune.
IMG_7645.jpeg
Post-prune. Large long roots were shortened. Fine roots were kept.
IMG_7655.jpeg

A single layered root. Data sheets mention this as uncommon/limited in Douglas-fir.
IMG_7656.jpeg

Canopy was lightly thinned to open up the interior and balance root removal.

A thin layer of bark was added to nebari-soil surface to ensure adequate moisture/insulation for root recovery. Tree placed in moderate shade for the time being.

Nice tree! Are you going to remove some of the branches, if so, what % of them will go would u say. What is nebari-soil if you don't mine me asking? Thanks for showing. I will assume you collected in the Cascades?

Yes some branches will eventually be removed. The canopy is too bushy.

The amount depends on how healthy the tree is and what form I decide on. If recovery is quick, removal could occur as early as late Summer/Fall this year. More likely it will happen next year.

What I meant by the nebari-soil surface is just the root flare and soil shown in the photos. To prevent drying out and fine root growth near the surface, a layer of bark was added. So what you see in the photos is covered.

This tree was collected on the Olympic Peninsula.

The covered nebari and surface to aid root growth.

Some interior needle loss, which was expected.

This year’s flush is stunted. An expected response given the time of year this tree was collected and the root work that was done at that time.

Compare with the foliage of a different DF which was collected around a year ago.
