I decided to make this tree it's own forum. It has beautiful gnarled bark, but since it is growing in a soupy environment at the moment its big root has rotted bark on it. After this tree gets collected and cleaned up, it should be an absolute beauty! This will be my first collection so I am very scared I will lose the tree! I am planning on putting it in straight 8822. I may have to cut that large root to make it fit into a pot, but that long root does look pretty damn nice20200331_141516.jpg

I briefly talked about this tree in another thread, but would like to hold a discussion on the tree, and everything I can do to ensure its life the best that I can! Hopefully this will be a success mission!!

The roots will most likely be muddy, with nasty clay like soil. Will this ruin drainage? How will I complete a successful repot?

If that is a honeysuckle, you won't be able to kill it!

I reckon it is.

There is another recent thread on them I reckon.

Woopty Doo! The bark verifies it! Do you think that bark adds some significant age on it?

Is this a Honeysuckle or Black Locust? You seem to be saying you're going to drastically change its drainage. If so, you are asking for trouble.

It will hurt the tree going from a field to Diatomaceous Earth? Should I add some organics so I dont just throw it into soil with no nutrients and call it a day?

My first collected tree all potted up! This had so many fine roots I didnt know what to do! There was one big root as long as my leg but I hacked that off when I was collecting it! I bare rooted it, then potted it up in straight Diatomaceous Earth. Will repot next spring.20200402_082553.jpg20200402_080455.jpg20200402_082617.jpg

i've had honeysuckle. You got a nice one there.

For now, just let it grow. If you get a number of suckers growing from the roots or the base of the trunk, remove them as quickly as they emerge. You want to encourage the main trunk to throw buds. Removing root suckers will for the tree to bud on the main trunk. Sometime in July would be the first time I'd do any pruning.

How long do these honey suckles naturally live? If I take good care of it, will it be around as I grow old? As of now, it has 4 little buds popping open right now.

I noticed alot of the bark peels off easily, and its just so much large pieces that they are all half way falling off. Is there any way to find the live vein? If i scrub all the bark with a brush, will all the bark come off except the live vein?
