Where I live and work (Irvine, CA), there are tons of Olive trees. I believe they're European olives. Anyway, I wanted to try my hand at taking some cuttings.

With Olives, is it always recommended to take cuttings from the base of the tree where the new growth sprouts?
Is it even possible to cut thicker branches or would those not even take?

Fully newb here, I just love the look of Olives so I wanted to give it a shot.

Hi fadriansquest,
Yes, you are living in the right place!
The biggest olive cutting I made have trunk diameter is 60 cm !
If you want olive for free, look it up on the Craigslist.
Good luck.
p/s: you may contact Si Nguyen, Bonsainut, or IanB

thanks for the replies.

I did a couple of searches on here (think I saw your names pop up a bit) and saw some example and useful pruning guides. think i'll try branch cuttings and take some sprouts while I'm at it.

Enjoy your cutting for now!

Keep an eye out for that old stump though!

It is good advice, Sorce.
On my way to work, I always keep my eyes on area with more than 20 old olive trees. I am looking forward to collect them when they are removed by construction team!

One other small piece of advice. Try to select your cutting to give you taper in your future trunk from the start. Save some time. Don't use a cylinder and then have to grow the taper.
