One big root?

Hello. I am wondering if there is a way to head off the big root problem. I see some of my trees have a small portion of the trunk with good nebari, then on the other side, there is one large root and nothing beside it. Is there a procedure to keep this from happening, or a way to take it off, and start smaller ones? Would you tourniquet it off, and graft some seedlings? Just wondering if should get ready for spring. Thanks for any help.

What kind of trees are we talking about?

mainly decidious. I have some trident maples that could use some work unless they start growing new roots. They are still young, but planted in the ground.

Trident roots are fairly easy if you are romantically envolved with whats below the soil line. I was not worried in the least when I did this....

So the best thing to do is wait until dig up and see whats under the large upper roots? Then, at that point, see if anything needs to be done as far as grafting new ones, or taking off the large ones? Thanks for the info, great tree.
