Just wanted some opinions on this one. I got a large trident maple wondering if it works better to air layer it this spring and do two trees.
without seeing more angles, my vote is keep it one big tree. Reduce the number of branches at the apex and trim them back religiously to keep them in check while growing out the lower branches.
One tree. From what I see, for ideal proportions I feel that the apex should be higher than what it is now. The trunk is massive an powerful and does have a bit of taper, but I feel that if you keep the apex just above where the main fat trunk 'ends', then it may look like a log with some sticks sticking out the top. Of course this will make the tree quite tall and large, but who doesn't want at least one massive tree in their collection.

but he needs to force development of the lower branches before the apex or he will end up with a large mushroom. right now, the apex will get the majority of the growth and will apex branching will fatten while lower branching underachieves. he can grow out the apex later, but can't really do it the other way around.
Is this one of the Tridents from Warren Hill's collection?

Yes I bought 2 of them
You beat me. I will be stopping at Plant City the 1st of March to pick up a Maple purchased from Steve. Had one of those in the back of my mind. Did he have any left?
