Only one flower this year

Very nice! Though I guess not intentional the single flower really compliments the rest of the tree. Usually see this species grown mostly for the flowers and after they bloom they are not that interesting. This would be an exception to that. It's very nice with a dozen flowers too, but has a very different feel.

Damn, that looks like a classic Chinese painting. The one flower compliments the tree perfectly! its so beautiful its stunning. I really love the pot too, the markings on it bring to mind an image of muted growth beneath the tree, like a large old magnificent tree rising above the insignificant undergrowth.

quick question: is that tree wisteria [bolusanthus speciosus] or are there other types of wisteria?? very nice tree by the way

It is Wisteria sinensis, Chinese wisteria.

That is a root from a large wisteria that grew in my yard in Tallahassee. It is about 18 years in a pot. They won't bloom until they've been in a pot for several years, are severely pot bound, and have been kept in a tray of water over the winter. Or mine won't.

I just answered someone else's question here about wisteria as bonsai, and included a picture of my other one a year or so ago. That one is close to 25 years, and was also dug from my old farm in Tallahassee.

I read to set them in water for a few weeks in the mid-summer, since that's when they're setting flower buds for the next year, hadn't heard winter. I collected one and stuffed it into a pot with the worst soil I could find, and then cut that bad soil by about 1/3 with sand from the sandbox. Then, after 3 years of absolute neglect, starved, drowning, and pot bound, it began to bloom beautifully.

Not much is better than a well-done wisteria in full bloom...not much is worse than that same tree 2 months later!
