I found this rock on a friend's property.... I think it may be quartz, but I dont know much about rocks.

I've always wanted to start a ROR project....and I keep my eyes peeled for suitable rocks.
This one has a good size and shape, but I'm not sure how well roots will grab it, being a smoother material.
Even though its smooth, it has a lot of surface topography....so maybe.
I know that a dark colored rock is preferable....it is to me anyway....but I do like this one.

I think all the dark spots are dirt that is so tightly packed, that the water hose didn't wash it out....I need to pick it clean with a small tool....or not.

I'd like some opinions on this rock....I dont have a tree in mind for it....just a rock.
Thanks for your time.

I think it is a "cool rock" but i would not choose it for root over rock. Love the multi-color combo and sheen. Suspect it is quartz or something similar.
Reasons why it would not be my first choice.
1. As you noted lighter color
2. Shiny surface
3. Looks likely to split over time ( always annoying later on)
4. Natural perch is right on top, not my favorite positioning
5. Prefer a wider stance so part of the rock remains showing after the tree is developed. Based on your hand for reference this would be difficult.

Well, I must say, your #4 and 5 are very good points.....no doubt.
Thank you for that.

It is a very cool rock on its own.
You could make a stand for it or put it in a small tray with some sand. Or get a couple more like it for a penjing display.

I think I like the suiseki idea with this one....really its the lack of width....coupled with the smoothness.

Will make a better shelf rock.

I used to have a fish tank before I had trees. It seems like I’m always on the lookout for a good rock for as long as I can remember.
