Comes out to a little over 4-5 cents per 1x1.5inch cube, including shipping to my state. Have to factor in the labor of cutting it yourself, and also it wont come with that nifty outer layer that keeps the roots from growing into adjacent cubes.
Could use seran wrap……..noted it is essential for my setup as I manually turn it on once a day……when no plastic overwrap they dry befor day ends for sure.

Good idea. Or maybe just space them apart slightly so they can air prune from the sides.

I think I will only use the 1" cubes for seed starting, then transplant them into a mesh pot of coarse mix. I wonder if they will naturally airlayer over time as the stem/trunk outgrows the rockwool.

I found it best to let them air -prune as long as possible and the rockwool(being stone that never degrades) essentially becomes obsolete and dissapears into roots and wood.

ZELKOVA ARE A STRETCHIN’

Gave one more watering today. These are twice as long or more than an outside grown zelkova sprout…….this is satisfactory, but I have stretched them further with other methods.
This will suffice and probably a bit longer in the next few days.

Upped the EC on all the deciduous seedlings outdoors.

Siberian Elm,Japanese Maple…..The Korean Hornbeam clumps I’m keeping for myself.

Will be bringing outdoors some zelkova brooms also to grow a bit before Autumn.

I figured I would grow out for a bit and then towards Autmn they can slow and build energy before leaf fall……..The nice thing about deciduous is they can be in either direction at particular or beneficial times.
EC is @ 1.1 although the vitamin B and magnesium suppliment probably ramped this from a .9 EC.
So still not very heavy on the nitrogen……..This is a balanced Mother fertilizer too for the elm as I want to lay them over and notch the cambium for Raft style rooting.

All the Elms,Maples and Zelkova will be for sale……..not sure how big by Autumn…….perhaps bigger then I think and can sell in Autumn.Especially the Siberian Elm…fast fast growing.I am staying to plan though and making Raft style starters with them.

Finally got the zelkova’s outside from the indoor stretching phase

They have sufficiently stratched for the most part……actually think even a week led is bright in some ways…….Next batch if all these work out I’ll use a different bulb or find a way to raise my led higher……..best stretching ever with these was in a dome with window light from North side exposure.

Thes should branch out rather quickly in full sun…..they are coming out of a 24 hr light cycle so should grow right into this.

I will straighten with very light aluminum wire in the near future. And can also be done after sale right away.

Experimenting with Burning Bush cuttings/air-layers

I know its rather late in the season, but could not resist.Took 49 rather stiff cuttings and put into the aeroponic cloner.A 5 sec dip in the 10xstrength dip&grow and then a dip into the clonex gel.
It has been almost 3 hrs as I am really letting them soak in the hormones since the wood is a bit overly ripe …..before I turn the unit on as the gel protects against embolism.

Also took some late season Air-layers from 2nd and 1st year wood to see what happens.Hopefully they root.Used Hormex #8 talc and some Clonex gel together.

I also have seed stratifying.

The bushes are in my yard and I have been told everything on the property is 100 yrs old.Definately the wild style Euonymous Alatas.
They look to have grown with indirect sun most of their lives, but the multi-trunk bases are about 12” around.

I love the guaranteed Fall color of these and they can potentially make very nice bonsai.

Sunset at Cm Bonsai!

Had to take some photos. The Siberian Elm are starting to shoot up and away. The Pines I am keeping are in the big 4” blocks…….All the $10 triple trunks are officially sold out.
The Zelkova are starting to branch out….exciting.The Japanese Maples hopefully will put several sets of leaves before Autumn……..when it is 80f or below as Late Summer approaches I will put into full sun.

I have a few Trident Maple seedling air-layers…full sun…..definately want some more growing next season.

The korean Hornbeam are in Full sun too.Monitering everything in the Grow Wool media.

lowered light intensity on cuttings

These are staying so turgid and healthy that there may be a chance of success.
I lowered the pofd to between 50-80 par…….with a hint of extra blue,so they do not get chlorotic by too much depletion…….following EZCLONE advice ( makers of my clone machine).I also have added an airstone bubbler for aeration since I use a cycle timer @2 min on /30min off……so no heat issues.Temps should be 68f-75f or it will get anaerobic.Mine is 71-73f with my Floor AC on a timmer at 3 hrs on 1 hr off constantly set at 72 F…….hey it works!!!!
Usual recipe although I used my own salts instead of clonex.Humidity always between 60-80%

Mother A&B @.4 ec
Hygrozyme…6ml per gallon
Hormex liquid …..3 ml per gallon
Photosynthesis plus Microbes….6 ml per gallon

I also added 1/32 tsp KELP POWDER
1/32 tsp CALMAG
Ph 5.8

as they are nearly identical ppm and balance either out to maintain a motherplant 1:1 ratio for better rooting.

ENCOURAGING NOTE ON EUONYMOUS ALATAS CUTTINGS!!!

After reading into Euonymous Alatas cuttings I am very optimistic these are fine.I was thinking perhaps they were a bit too woody, but to my suprise Micheal Dirr notes in his Woody Plant Propogation book that the species and Compactum are known to root over 90% success at ANY TIME they are in leaf….June-August.
He also noted he would have to actually try very hard to get anything less than 90% rooting of cuttings.
Stoked!!!
These have a very well look to them in the aeroponic cloner.Dirr noted 8 weeks, but should be sooner in the clone machine.
I would love to have a rather large crop of these and pump them up in the co2 fertilization over Winter…….this is fun stuff for sure. They look great in the cloner at two days.

Great and extremely reliable Autumn color on these Burning Bush.I’m ready to grow the dickens out of them.

He also noted a very deep budset on the cuttings that can only be broken after 90-100 days at 40f in a chiller……so hopefully can put out outside to harden naturalky and then store in fridge a few mnths and then push some heavy co2 fertilized growth…….perhaps …….

SIBERIAN ELM RAFT STYLE BONSAI STARTERS……..production!

I am in love with this idea!
Dirrs’ propogation book notes that these Elm root without hormone at 80%.
I added a little mixture of #1 hormex talc and clonex gel together.I scraped the bark around a couple nodes with a sharp Exacto knife after pulling leaves.
The good news with these is they are fertilized with a 1:1 N-K ratio Motherplant Fertilizer.Rooting should be guaranteed really.
Will just continue to lay these over into adjacent 1.5” Grodan Mini-blocks as they grow from the very start……..they are held together with bamboo skewers.
Rooting will be vigorous as they air-prune at each root site since I left the plastic wrap on each individual block.
This is way cool!!!!

UPDATE WITH THE SIBERIAN ELMS

In the beginning I almost felt guilty trying to sell an invasive weed across America…….
Now I am reconsidering the value of Siberian Elm for bonsai!
If growing in suitable conditions and in vast sunlight these actually get quite a nice look to them.Nice thick leaves that are sturdy well into Autumn.
And the other big game changer for me is that there is actually some appreciable Autumn leaf coloring.I had no idea ,as I thought they would turn brown and wither away. These look really great though!
I think I prefer these Pumilla to the parvifolia species for sure.
Siberian Elm is way more cold hardy too!
Zone 4 or lower even!!!!!

These are all staying outside growing.Clumps and upright styles. They are very fun AND very fast growing….I did not sew these till’ first week of August.
I can see already some of them are quick to get some girth in the trunks.
Also they will make great defoliation candidates as the leaves are a bit larger than the Parvifolia.

All this fantastic Autumn color has persuaded me to do an indoor crop.In fact I will sew the seeds today,as they sprout with just a drop of water……like a couple days….so cool.
Clumps, uprights I guess….clump style is nice.I have some interesting experiments going on.

Amazing how just the pretty Autumn leaf attribute of these Ulmus Pumilla has swayed me….total night and day really.
I was straight up on a guilt trip when I planted over 800 of them outside last season to sell😂

Now they are suddenly fascinating🤔

Gosh, fascinating…. yet still invasive.

Sorry, but imho perpetuating a no no because it’s potentially a tree good for bonsai is still a no no.

…and that’s all I have to say about that.

It’s all good I’m USDA legal there are some states that I cannot ship to✌️
Very similar to Chinese Elm In this regard.

The guilt trip I was referring to was me assuming that they were just trash Bonsai trees that were really not a good quality Species.
I felt overly greedy that’s why I was selling them $1.50 apiece.
It is more agricultural ….insects
Someone can completely ruin your year if you ship a Japanese beetle or a lantern fly out west!!!
I cannot ship any Elms to Oregon for instants because of Dutch album disease.
Our agriculture laws need to be respected and people need to adhere to them a lot of times the post office don’t even uphold agriculture laws respect our agriculture

Yep. You should of been in Chicago when Dutch Elm disease hit the trees in the 60’s. Chainsaw Heaven and no more shade, nor birds anywhere.
Time never heals all wounds in our lifetime, ecologically,

Today aim Diving the reefs of Cozumel. Regretfully loved to death, one clumsy Diver at a time.

Ive seen videos of what that disease done in netherlands or spain and was brutal, very painful, thankfully there are programs propagating clones of ulmus minor and glabra almost inmune to it and replanting them where the elms got wipe out
