About a week ago, I took this small apple seedling and I repotted it. Its next to freezing temperatures, and I havent been back to the location its at in a week. I came back today, the top leaves were shriveled up, I expected it to be dead already due to how cold it is, but now its got big red buds. What do you guys think is happening and what should I do with this apple this winter. Its already been exposed to freezing. 10 minutes ago I put moss inside the pot thinking it might help with insulation. I also placed the pot inside a larger pot thinking it may help some.

If you could sink the pot in a garden or landscape up to the edges of the pot and mulch it with 12" of dry leaves , it would be happy and healthy and you would be wise!

These buds were not on the tree the last time I saw it 5 or 6 days ago. Isnt it odd theyve all grown since its so cold? The whole trees lined with them as well.

Yes, buds are supposed to be there this time of year. Size depends upon species more than anything else.

Trees set their buds for spring during autumn-winter. I wouldn't be concerned unless the buds were swelling and pushing new leaves. I've left plenty of crab apple seedlings outside in snow and frost with no type of winter protection and all that were adequately watered survived into spring. Some of my japanese maple seedlings have set large buds for next spring already after losing their leaves last month.
