Overwintering Dwarf Pomegranate zone 7

Hello, I have 2 Dwarf Pomagranate trees that i am going to train for bonsai. I live in zone 7 and was wondering whether i can wait until leaf drop and then store in an unheated, dark garage until spring or do i have to bring them inside and just keep them cool and on the dry side with plenty of light.
