The post linked below is to a National Bonsai and Penjing museum blog post about one of the historic trees at the facility--a ficus specifically cross-bred for bonsai by another unsung U.S. bonsai pioneer, "Papa" Kaneshiro of Hawaii. The museum's tropical species greenhouse is named in his honor.
While the 450-year -old Yamaki Pine that survived the Hiroshima blast gets a lot of attention, most of the other trees at the museum have their own backstories too...
Historical Tree Spotlight: The Chinese Banyan — National Bonsai Foundation
While many bonsai are often plucked from the ground after natural growth, some trees are specially created. For example, the Chinese banyan – or Ficus microcarpa ‘Kaneshiro’ – is the incredible cross-pollination work of the tree’s donor, Haruo “Papa” Kaneshiro. Museum Curator
