I've been chatting with some other gents that have paperbarks but I am curious if anyone is working with them in the north? Z5b
Here is my tree, with my original plan (which now I know is not the best, could use some more taper so a lower trunk chop). Lots of work to go but it's got some potential.
My main concern is the order and timing of steps to get this to a bonsai, this was my plan of attack
Spring 2019 - trunk chop, tap root chop, repot in bonsai soil (pray)
Concerns - I got the tree in a fall sale, cambrium is green but I did not get to see the condition of the tree when it had leaves on it. Another paperbark in the nursery still had green leaves on it but not very many and no fall colours at the same time this tree was bare. This leads me to believe that the tree is not in the greatest health.
- Should a trunk chop be carried out when the tree is pot bound? i.e with the most amount of roots in the pot. It's not completely pot bound, I'll add photos of the roots when I get home.
Alternate - plant in ground (not sure if fall or spring is best, or if I should cut the tap root or the trunk before planting)
Wait for full strength (not sure what this would entail) trunk chop.
Then wait X amount of years to dig and pot up.
Cheers,
Connor
