Pay attention!

For years I have heard the old saying, “the best thing a farmer can put in his garden is his shadow”. I think this could apply to bonsai practitioners also. Last Saturday night this was a healthy JRP. By Sunday night it looked like this. It was covered with tiny green worms. In one day they pretty much ruined it. I guess if I had been keeping a better eye on it, I could have prevented a lot of damage.

These are sawfly larvae and that's what they do. I have lost a couple mugo to them and they almost killed a 35 year old Scots pine. I use sevin to kill them quick when I see them.

Do they only attack pine related trees?

I have only seen them on the pines mentioned.

This is probably one of the reasons I would be hesitant to use an automated watering system all of the time (or similarly, to *not* change my own oil in my vehicles).

I’ll let you know next spring. I will baby it till then. I bought it from Julian Adams and would like to have it in my collection.

I have seen them on deodara cedars also. I try to keep an eye out for eggs and just pull those needles off and toss em.
