Just a reminder for everyone in the Mid-Atlantic states that the Potomac Bonsai Show and Sale is coming up in a couple of weeks in Washington, May 3, 4 and 5. Harry Hirao, Chase and Solita Rosade, David Kruetz, Jim Doyle and others are all giving demos and classes.

Can't find a vendors' list, but count on Dale Cochoy, Meehan's, David Kreutz (I assume he's going to be there with his azalea imports), Ron Lang, Nature's Way, Julian Adams.

If you've never been, go. I've picked up some terrific stock and "stuff" there over the years.

I'm planning to be up there on the 3rd around the time it opens. If you guys are there at that time, we should get together. If anyone is planning to be there, would be nice to put faces to internet names.

I'll be there all day Sunday. I'm helping keep an eye on the PBA member's tree display in the Chinese Pavilion. Come say hi. I wont be the tall older guy or the tallish younger guy. You'll need to use deductive logic. (Hint: I'm the older not so tall guy).
All the good stuff will prolly be gone by Sunday from the vendor tent...bummer.
9 AM to 4 PM Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The price of admission is hard to beat too. Free. Almost hard to believe it's almost here. I still have several hornbeams and zelcova and beech that have no leaves yet. Those buds are getting fat, though. Might be tricky to field a show team for the member's display by then.

It would be great to meet some of you guys. I plan to attend Jim Doyle's presentation at 2:00 on Saturday since I have aquired a few Ponderosa pines in the last couple of years.

I will be wearing a denim shirt with my name and Virginia Bonsai Society logo on it.

Well, not so sure I can make it this year. The guy that usually gives me a ride up there may not be going, and I have an awful sense of direction. Sigh :(

I figured I'd recognize you as the guy carrying lots of ficus ;)

Not sure if I'll be there on Saturday. I'll probably be there early on Friday morning.

Made it up to the show yesterday early. Always fun. Tapped out my finances quickly:rolleyes:

Here are some photos from the show and sale.

First photo is of stacks of BIG (and not expensive)mica pots. a 24" deep oval was $40...

Rest of the photos are of entries in the juried show

First is a collected blueberry (and loaded with tiny berries just developing)

Second is a shohin/mame sized Black Pine

Satsuki azalea

Juniper forest on slab (pretty large, at least three feet long)

Various trees from the Arb's Japanese, American and Chineses pavillions:

First is of a collected smooth-leaf elm from Ohio. BIG tree, almost 4 feet high.

Second is the entryway of the American pavillion. First tree on the left is (I think) a Harry Hirao collected Cali juniper, second is Guy Guidry's big Bald Cypress, third is John Naka's blue atlas cedar cascade, fourth is Vaughn Banting's Sweetgum.

Third a collected American Beech from Maryland (not completely leafed out yet, Am. beech are among the last trees here to leaf out)

Cedar Elm group. Also not small. About 3 feet tall

Chinese elm forest

More National collection trees:

Japanese wisteria (BIG)

Old black pine in the Chinese pavillion-note old container-among the oldest in the collection

Eastern White Cedar (arborvitae), I think this one was dug in Canada by Reiner Goebel?

Toringo Crab apple--one of my favorite trees just finished blooming

thanks Rockm. Good pics for sure. I hope to get some shots Sunday, as well as some goodies from the vendor tent, although I expect it to be fairly picked over by then.

I'm surprised that Sargent Juniper planting got third, it looks beautiful.

Seriously?? That was a fantastic grouping and one of the best trees I've ever seen entered into the juried show. Which tree won?

I was lucky enough to have work bring me to the area this week. Spent a good part of the last two days there and will be going back for the Forest demonstration tomorrow morning. Luckily I don't have to worry about spending all my money as it's not practical for me to haul stuff first to Texas next week, then back home to the Northwest.

However, if anyone is thinking of getting anything from the vendors, they still had plenty of awesome stock at closing tonight (Saturday). I'm sure it'll be well worth a shopping trip on Sunday as well.
