@PinNoir - you are in Louisiana. Picea crassifolia is a species of spruce from QingHai, China. I believe it is fairly rare in the USA. I know nothing about it, though it might be more tolerant of heat than other sprunce.

For Louisiana, I would try Picea orientalis. It is native to Turkey and areas east of Turkey. It is somewhat more tolerant of hot summers and mild winters than the average North American native spruce.
