I am having Jerry Braswell make me a stand for this Kifu size Juniper.

I had a buddy of mine mock up four options that had potential. Which one do you nuts think is the best for the composition? Some are squat looking, and some are tall looking, but Jerry will make the final stand 6-7 inches tall.

PS If the last stand is chosen, it will be made in the same dark stain as the others.

I think 2 is the best fit for the style of the tree, but for me it would need to be larger to increase its visual weight - maybe 20% wider. I'm sure Jerry can advise on that though.

Yes, the table top will be made based on the dimensions of the pot. These are just rough mock ups.

Went with 2 aswell. 1 and 3 are too high in my opinion, they highlight the pot more then the tree.

I like 2 as well, but wish the legs were a bit longer.

After the mock up, this is the one I have been leaning towards also. I just wanted to hear from others who have more experience with display. It will be ordered to be taller, and I’m unsure if I want to request straight legs, or longer curved legs like those in the picture above.

I like the last one in this pot and don't mind the color, depending on the tablecloth color.

I like the second for the tree, but only because it looks a right match with the Jin shape, now ...that will change when foliage grows. Too ornate then I reckon.
But I reckon it's the pot......the tree is in!

I think they’re all too busy. The tree is busy too. Something in the composition needs to allow the eye to settle. I agree it should be taller, but you need a subtler design for the stand than any you have shown, in my opinion...worth exactly what you paid.😜

Of the four, I picked option 4 because it was taller and plain.

As a general rule, I have noticed that pretty much all the stands we use for bonsai are too short, whereas the Japanese tend to show their trees on taller stands. The idea is to lift the tree up from the display table so that it elevates the tree to eye level.

A conifer should have a rather plain table for much of the same reasons we use unglazed pots.

I changed the planting angle a bit when I repotted (I like the extra twist I get in the deadwood from this angle), so it does look a bit funny right now. Once it recovers from the repotting I will make adjustments. Either way, it is light years better than last season!

Since this is going to be custom, I figured, why not play a little. This is of course rough, but any thoughts?

Again, I’d rather go for the simpler design of the second stand.

And I understand it’s a custom build. But I’d go for a stand I could use for several trees/styles. The stand should not draw attention to itself. It should complement the tree, not distract.

I suggest you look thru some Kokofu books.

I chose #2 as well. It suits the tree.

As for the tree, I agree with BVF on the unsettling factor. It's got good potential but the deadwood in the front is off-putting for me. I think it needs to be reduced significantly. Additionally and/or alternatively, I think the apex needs to be brought forward. The horizontal branch should be pliable enough to bend it in such a way as to go in front of the deadwood and create some interplay with it if you really wanted to keep the jin (I would choose to carve it way back myself). As it is, the deadwood is the focal point and not in a good way, IMO.

Thank you all for your contributions, I placed my order today! Display time at my local club show will be in June, so we will how the tree looks after 3 months of growing! To a beautiful composition, cheers!!!
