I walked past some great old trees yesterday, it's always hard to capture the character in photos esp iPhone snapshots like these but maybe on a full computer screen they'll show up ok.

Some nice old whitebark pine.

Alpine larch.

Notice how the branches tend to become vertical with strong leader growth of their own, alpine larch naturally grow in the candelabra form very often.

Here's our destination for the day, the sweet line running up between the rocky peaks in the middle of the pic. We got to the base of the couloir, dug a snowpit and decided snow stability was not quite there for a safe ascent, home safe to ski it another day.

We did find some nice turns in the meadows on the way down though, some nice larch in these pics too.

Mostly alpine fir in this pic, these trees more than any other conifer I see grow in the classic dense formal upright style even usually retaining a pointed crown well into full maturity.

Thanks for the pics! Nothing quite like that blue sky in the winter is there. Love those real old trees, so...stirring.

Beautiful, thanks for sharing. Interesting that the larch grow that way, similar to spruce I guess.

lots of deadwood in nature - real-life is a struggle...... keep the pictures coming, I like to spend more time looking at real-trees than bonsai trees

Old whitebark pine snag. Been standing there dead a long long time and still interesting colour tones, part of the reason I'm not a big fan of the overly lime sulphered look.

Mt. Tree

Here's a couple of a Pondarosa Pine and a Doug Fir on our property. Shelley is 5'2" and the fir is about 2' tall growing in rock.

Small wonders. Often walking through the forest craning our neck to see the giants we miss the things at our feet. These trees growing in a down log caught my eye in the Umpqua Forest and this Live Oak growing in rock at the Rogue River Gorge.

Here's a nice old ponderosa pine. A study in naturalistic upright style and branch movement. It looks like the tree is a favorite perching spot for a big cat. The last shot shows claw marks where its hind feet gain purchase when ascending.

Rediscovered one of my favorite old trees a couple nights ago. The first pic is about 10 years ago. The night pics, handheld flashlight and cell phone, someday I'll go back with more light and a real camera. Long exposure during and electrical storm?
I really should pack a camera around with me, no computer to process images so I haven't been bothering.

Wireme,

I've seen your avatar and always assumed it was a mountain boot. Nice to get the closeup and see otherwise.

BTW, does anyone know how to view those avatars in a larger size, so I don't jump to these conclusions again?

A boot!
The avatar image is laricifomes officinalis, aka agarikon aka quinine conk. An exciting find for me actually, quite rare and only found on old growth timber. The subject of a lot of research regarding its medicinal potential lately.
I don't know about the image size thing.
