Pinus Thunbergii has no branches?

1 1/2 yr. old - 9" tall Pinus Thunbergii has no branches. Otherwise looks healthy, good color and producing needles. Is this normal and if not how do I encourage it to produce branches. Thank You!

Pictures and a location would be a great start as there may be things we can see in a photo that you have not thought of. Location allows us to consider your climate in any advice.
In general it is not unusual for JBP seedlings, and many other species, to just grow straight up so I'm not really surprised to hear of a 2 year old JBP with no branching though usually a healthy tree will form a few extra buds each spring to make side shoots as well as the main trunk.
Generally we need to prune trees to force them to grow side shoots. Without seeing the photos I'm not able to say for sure in this case but I expect that will apply here too.
I'd also like to have some details on your care up to this stage - location of the tree, watering and fertilizer regime, etc.
