New year means new projects. I've been wanting to put together some clumps for a while now. I grew out a few flats of JM just for this project. Total of 8 clumps with 7 trees per clump.

Large and small seed JM

Preparing the pot with window screen to prevent the substrate from coming out the drainage holes.

Here I'm grouping them in preparation for zip tying them together, this will create a tighter clump when they fuse at the base.

Here they zipped together.

Now I have to choose the correct size washer to thread them into.

Washer is now set.

If you prefer a looser style clump just snip off the zip tie after you've threaded them through the washer. You can then rearrange them however you prefer.

I also did one clump using 'Bloodgood' cuttings. I think a red leaf clump would look pretty sharp.

About how deep are the washers buried?
I will be doing a few of these soon.

Maybe about 1/2". At this stage I need them to bond at the base. As soon as they do the base will begin to swell rapidly. At that point I will prepare them to root above the washer. After they root above the washer, I'll then cut off the roots below the washer. Then repot them on a board to arrange the new roots.
