A few years ago I acquired an old and beautiful piece of premna microphllya raw material. the stump was primarily deadwood (my favorite) save only for two finger thick branches growing upwards from the bottom right of the stump. the best side of the deadwood was naturally hollow with great movement. better yet, the taller of the two branches was positioned perfectly to create small layered pads of foliage to highlight the deadwood. development according to plan A was going smoothly. the tree had a ways to go, but you could see the future. Out of the blue, the main branch, already starting to twig into pads, died. try as i might, I could not get a replacement to grow. today, I realized more waiting wasn't going to make a difference, so the tree was put on the work table and carefully examined. with one living branch left, there weren't many options. clearly, the live branch and the original front would not work. so plan B involved altering the deadwood so the original back would be the new front. judge for yourself the outcome. pray the remaining branch thrives.
best wishes, sam
