Wiki says Johannesburg's lowest temperature in an average year is 26.4F (-3.1C). If we are talking USDA hardiness zones, this would be a zone 9. Does your location typically have any below freezing nights in the winter?

On the USDA scale, zone 14 would mean a location that doesn't average a single temperature below 70F in an entire year. That would have to be like sea level on an equatorial island somewhere.

Just let you know when the temperature does not go below 55 deg.F [ 12,8 deg,C ]
you use a fridge set at vegetable crisper temperature and trees stay
there for 2 months.

The lower light for Christmas and the lower night temperatures, will start
the dormant cycle.
So sleep from third week in January and until April 1st.
A week in bright light, no sun and then back into morning sun.
Doing since 1980.
Good Day

Even though Johannesburg's extreme lows aren't that low, they get four months straight with low temperatures of 45F or less. I would predict many deciduous species would and must already thrive there.

Great, you should do fine with stuff like trident maple, Japanese maple and Japanese black pine. What do you intend to keep?

Amur is a zone 3 Siberian maple. Why grow Amur when you have a great climate for Trident and Japanese?
