Saw this on Facebook> Bonsai America.
A guy asking for grow box inspiration pics. Steve G. dropped these pixs.
1x6 plastic (PVC) Should last for a bit I would think.
Thoughts?

Hm.. not sure why then a box and not a shallow plastic pot? I took it wooden bozes would have some preferred properties?

I assume some people like to use wood grow boxes because they are custom sized for their needs... These might just last longer and no wood rot over time.

Lowes 1x4x8 pic for $13
Home Depot.has 1x4x8 composite exterior trim for $8

I think its a good idea if you have the time and desire to make your own training pots.
I think they might be more expensive to make (I think plastic wood is more expensive than normal wood?) but probably worth it for the longevity.
The best thing about them is they won't rot and should last a lot longer than the wood boxes, particularly if you are using wood made for decking or that otherwise has UV protection incorporated into the plastic.
The biggest issue with some plastics is deterioration from the sun and/or weather. Not all plastics can handle that unless they have some UV protection (not sure how that works but its something added to the material when the thing is molded).
They are also heavy duty and less apt to warp than thinner plastic for a large training pot.

Wood can be scavenged for free. Grow boxes do not require premium quality wood.

Biodegradable and potentially free... seems like a win-win to go with wood.

Free sources of wood: Pallets, construction sites, mills (if you live in timber country), etc..

They look nice though. What kind of adhesive/fasteners did you use?

I haven't made them.. But I Google some planters made of the materials. Some used plumbing PVC glue and screws on the joints. The glue is used in plumbing for home water pipes so mit toxic. The glue works fast 😆
I assume multi material screws or screws for composite materials.

4 to 9 bucks buys plastic bonsai pots with open grid bottoms locally.
No construction needed.

Even for me, Anderson flats are a good buy even with shipping them.
I can devote more of my bonsai hobby time to my trees instead of building pots

I thought pvc became brittle when exposed to uv?
Not all PVC is the same.
There are different formulations of plastic that have UV protection.
Regular white PVC pipes dont have it so yea that gets brittle

Many greenhouse benches are made from PVC and have UV protection
