Japanese Black pine (Pinus thunbergii) is very easy to grow from seeds.

They grow very fast if given the right soil/pot. Here are some from seeds that sprouted in the spring of 2014:

March 2015:

I repotted some in various container volumes, just to see.

Today, some of the 3 dozens or so:

nice to see a development. I always wonder how to do best. I had more than 100 sprout in 2015, now some are already to big to make small trees out of them... Luckily some did grow slower.

Here's a few of mine that are a year older than yours. This past year they took off like crazy. I have about 15 of them and they are all pretty much this size. They're squeezing me out of room. :)

Very nice!

About how long did the Pringle can last, and would you recommend using it again? Pictures say about three years? Theyre a really nice shape and size for exposed root shohin so if you found it effective I could see using them

Really like what you've done with this one... I have done a few similar JBP exposed roots from 2015 as well but went for bigger trees now I wish I had made for a few smaller ones

If your worried about how long they last I would recommend you use plastic 2L water bottles as they wont break down
