I really want to save this guy. I've lost trees for not acting quick enough. Last year I bought it at sale in home depot here in Washington dc and did a trunk chop to lowest branch. then I pruned roots and placed it in the pot shown in picture. maple did fine, dormancy went smoothly, and I had a vibrant tree by midspring. about a month ago I noticed the leaves on one of three main branches wilted. the whole branch ended up dying. now the other two branches look like they are beginning to wilt see picture. I checked for spider mite webs but didn't find any.

Your soil looks very organic n water retentive, make sure its drying out some before watering, change it next spring, when your trees roots are not filling most of the container it also causes the soil to remain to wet, looks like you planted it in this container from what looks to be a 4” nursery pot

I agree the soil looks too moisture retentive and the pot is too big for the tree so the soil staying too wet. If there are drain holes off to the sides of the pot, I'd tilt it to assist with drainage. Need to bury those surface roots, too.

I agree that the soil appears to be somewhat water retentive, but I don't think this explains what's is happening. I mean, it should affect the whole tree, not some specific branch alone, right?

Check if the base of the dying branche was not knocked off by wind or something. These are very tender and break quite easily. I broke some myself, and also had the wind breaking some...

No, this a root issue, most likely brought on or made worse by the heavily organic soil.
