So all day yesterday we worked on the Shinpaku that had freeze burn in winter because of my whole garage debacle (lost one JBP and a literati juniper). Anyway this is how it looked in March!
Actually this is the one that we liked alsoIf only the live vein came around the deadwood in the original front! I feel like I need to see the live vein near the soil while also highlighting as much of the deadwood as possible. So maybe this one? And hopefully get some foliage in the front?

If you could use the back as a front and push the canopy around the deadwood, I think it would look pretty awesome.
I would carefully consider the image 2018 as a front. Post #6 second picture from the end. This shows a broader nebari as well as both live veins originating from the base with a good contrast between the deadwood portion and the thriving upper canopy. I understand it changes direction from the extra deadwood on the other side but i prefer the balance. The branches would have to be reworked to frame the trunk and highlight the movement. Just another point of viewSo... any thoughts on the best front? This was the original front as intended by Rod.
I'm sorry but I couldn't find an image 2018 and post # 6 had no images so I'm confused which one. Could you repost the image? ThanksI would carefully consider the image 2018 as a front. Post #6 second picture from the end.
I thought... "A new Rod King is born..." But, alas, there can be only one.

Because you can see the live vein better. Also the foliage does come more forwards in this view. It's just hard to see in these flat images. I'll take one from above.
I agree. This is my choice for the front. You don't get to see that terrific deadwood in this view but there is live vein on this side. That drop branch on the left Is a nice first branch but I think simplifying the design by eliminating those first branches on the right could really improve the tree. Nonetheless, this is a spectacular tree that I would be proud to own. Congratulations. My goof i meant post #5

True dat. So much time has been spent on the deadwood: blowtorch, carving, natural weathering, etc that I'd hate to not have it at least partly visible as you walk up to it for eg the image in # 7. Our mentor and sensei Vance Hanna is coming on Wednesday for dinner since he is in town from California and I will see what his thoughts are. Also, the new display table by David Knittle is arriving today after being commissioned 3 months ago so I'm super excited to see how it looks! BTW @Forsoothe! I showed Mr. King your post and he smiled. He asked who you were because he did not recognize your handle but I have no idea, don't even know your first name so I couldn't tell himI guess this party needs a skunk. The best feature of this tree is the carving. The tree, sans carving is ~very good~, but not really as remarkable in and of itself without the carving being prominently displayed. The live vein is important and nice, but if you had a race-car, would the best view be looking under the hood, or as it whizzed by at 200 mph?
