With good soil available plant in the ground and then be prepared to wait a few years for the growth to really kick in ("first year sleeps, second year creeps, third year leaps"). If you have hungry critters then some protection is in order.

From what I've read, Tridents are zone 5. I'm assuming I could leave them in ground?

In SE PA, certainly. They survive in the ground up here, and we're just a bit colder than you
